Um Naief said...: I can understand and deeply sympathize w/ how you're feeling! Sometimes it doesn't matter what you do, the pain doesn't go away. Not that I'm trying to make you feel worse, I just know how it is. Being in Bahrain and away from the U.S., my family and friends is very difficult. Not to say that I don't like it here, because I do (most days! ;) ), plus my husband is here, but... I still miss the U.S. Some days it's better than others and then sometimes... well, I do what you're doing. It'll get easier w/ time, trust me. The first year is the hardest.

My family and friends, I miss them deeply, but even if they were here in the US with me, I would still ache for Bahrain. When I talk to my friends here about Bahrain, they don't understand why I long for it so much. I just say that once they see and experience Bahrain, they would fall in love with it too. Is it the scortching heat, the desert and sand, the never ending traffic jams, the stifling humidity, the sad political situation? I don't know if it's the old vs. new, seeing all the ppl, from all the different nationalities, walking around the suq (hurriedly going on their way), the coffee shops and shesha, the old bldgs and beautiful architecture... there's just so much here - even in the midst of so much chaos there is beauty.; February 20, 2006

Exactly the same feeling buddy! Even if my family, friends and all my worldly possessions were brought to me, Bahrain would still be sadly missed.

Do you know why? It is because our love for our country is unconditional. Despite the 'political situation' and the humiliation, we love Bahrain. Despite the fact that we are being graded as citizens and put into categories and classes in a pseudo-deMOCKratic situation which makes the heart bleed, we love Bahrain.
Even when we see and live and experience injustice, we love Bahrain.
And the more it hurts, the more we love it.

When I was in Bahrain, my pet name for her was "El Mal7ah" ..

I guess that wasn't an accurate description..

You can't explain the mystical and magical part of Bahrain. It simply is just something that happens to everyone I know who has been there. The place gets under your skin and you feel like you must return. It isn't one specific thing that stands out that makes this Boston based psycho shawarma lover come back again and again. It is a lot of little things I think that individually mean nothing but as a whole add up to that intangible yet impressionable making love that you have to experience to understand.

Do yourself a favor. Graduate law school and take a trip to Bahrain. I think you will sense the same thing we all feel about the country..; February 22, 2006
