I couldn't believe my eyes when my eyes fell on the following ad and my mind grasped what it said. Here's the offending newspaper clipping:

It translates roughly to: "For Exchange in Hael (somewhere in Never Never Land). A Dodge (car), model 1991 for a housemaid (NEW) from Sri Lanka or India.."

Oh my God! I really am speechless.

What the f***k is going on here? A human being in exchange for a flipping car? Why is Sri Lankan or Indian life so cheap that it can be bartered with a handshake? I really am ashamed that people can be bought, sold and exchanged in the open market like cattle at this day and age.

Thanks to www.nasser99.com for bringing this tragedy to our notice.

What paper was this in?

SillyBahrainiGirl said...

don't know.. some paper from never neverland ..

anything goes there.. but it really is demeaning. i got it from nasser's site.. will email him for more details.

We all know Never Neverland is out there like Pluto but never have I seen or heard of things being so blunt. Even shows you the low standards the paper has in content control with the classified ads.

That is really horrible. Being a maid is a job (worldwide). But in the Arabian Gulf a maid means a slave that you could abuse and sell whenever you want.

Such a shame.

SillyBahrainiGirl said...

it is blunt indeed.. it is one of the saddist things i have seen in print so far. I mean i am used to all the lies and all (hehehe)..i have become immune to crime and accidents and horror stories... but such stone-age behaviour really rubs salt to a wound.

and we call ourselves civilised. huh..

Come on SBG don't get down on yourself.

Heck, if parents sell their
children to brothels, this should
come as no surprise. It is rampant in Thailand, particularly.
But you're right, SBG. This is simply reprehensible, but unfortunately this crap does take place.

Other shameful practices are sanctioned by religious authorities. I have noted responses (fatwa) made by some of these digusting clerics to questions pertaining to 'how to treat one's slaves' in 1425 !!! (Hejri not Gregorian)

This type of thing happens all over the Middle East, not just in the Gulf. My wife's uncle beat his maid in Saudi, of course there nothing is unacceptable. This type of stuff happens from Beirut to Dubai.

I read this ad more than five times today thinking, 'surely this guy was attempting to say something else instead.' I tried re-wording it, adding commas, changing sresses, but it just wouldn't work!

And then, I realised that it says 'in exchange for a new maid' - you read that? 'NEW' maid!

Do they come in models and versions now?!

Did he mean 'young'? No, he didn't mean young - the word is quite obvious in Arabic!

New maid ...new maid... what defines a new maid? A newly arrived maid maybe? And what's the difference between a newly arrived one and one which has stayed for a while?

And then...why a car? Who's gonna carry this guy around the place? The 'NEW' maid!?

SillyBahrainiGirl said...

i am still trying to come to terms with this...

for exchange..a car for a maid?

don't know Odd A... yes, she would have to carry him around I suppose.

and let's shoot the messenger and get it over with..

why can't we just admit it; slavery still exists in this part of the world because we are too damned lazy to clean up our shit

I made a short documentary about that, where I went around interviewing at least 80 or so maids. Some talked to me about the culture in a few villages in Indonesia where the woman has to work instead of the man, some talked to me about the war they experienced in Sri Lanka, where they basically saw their own families being slaughtered, a few talked to me about being abused by Saudi men, one actually talked about how she was used to being abused since her husband treats her like a dusty doormat. Tear-jerking experiences. Some are forced to be maids at the age of 14 or so, which is depressing.

I wish I knew how to 'vlog' so I can share this.

Did you hear about the maid being executed for killing her boss? The trial ended about 5 days ago, and it was 6 months long. It was a brutal murder, her boss was dismembered and they threw her pieces in her son's bird cage, but state-sanctioned murder still makes me tremble.

[I originally typed this message in Arabic, but I've no Arabic keyboard, so this was rather hard to read.]

Firstly, I don't see why you claim that SBG doesn't know her Arabic. The translation was perfect. I would have cringed if I read that, Nasser or whoever shared it obviously cringed, and so did other Arabic-speaking bloggers here. Are you just feeling guilty because you traded your maid for a slice of pizza or a pair of flip-flops?

Do you actually support the trade? She doesn't win anything. She's being used as a mannequin in display, wondering why the fuck she's considered unworthy. It doesn't matter if it's a Porche or an Echoe, you just don't belittle another human being's existence like this.

If YOU read properly or understood Arabic, then you would enlighten yourself by reading a book or two by May Ziada, who used to speak against the trading of women in Egypt, and how women in the Arab world were still treated like Animals even though Islam clearly doesn't justify such actions.

As for the last part of your comment, you'd be surprised at what people will do here. I believe that someone doesn't want to go through the agency and wait for a Visa to get ready when they can just get a 'slave' through another person who has already gone through that shit.

Poverty is the root cause of all evil. It's sad that such things actually take place today. I too keep reading such stories in our local newspapers in India.

SillyBahrainiGirl said...

i don't know about poverty...i dont think it is an excuse..

but i know of decency... a word many should look up in the dictionary
