This came to on my email. I couldn't post it as a reply too. For some reason or the other, Blogger doesn't want Dr Khalaf's response to the post before the previous post.

I am posting it here as it came to me.. the last bit is incomplete. May be Dr Khalaf can fill in the blanks later on ;)

I find history as fascinating as it is disturbing. Our history stirs my emotions, in particular, because I know it is distorted.

A few years ago I spend a few nights reading a book called The Lies My Teacher Taught Me.. an amazing book which analyses history textbooks in the US, and pinpoints all the omissions and distortions presented to young people in history textbooks.

I wish an Arab Muslim with balls would do that... I don't have the knowledge, time nor resources. Otherwise, I would have volunteered to do just that. It needs a collective effort and a will to review history for the sake of presenting reality in a scientific manner and not to fuel resentment. History is a trust, which we should preserve and pass on to the next generation.

Whether it is right or wrong, it had happened. It's over. It's gone...and if we have learned our lesson, it will probably not repeat itself again.

Those without a past, cannot look forward to a future. But a past based on lies, fabrications and distortions, is as good as no past at all.

Here's Khalaf's response, enjoy. Let the debate continue and REMEMBER: the government is watching u; be civil; and don't break any laws or by-laws or by-laws of by-laws:

Salaam
For some reason I was not able to post this to your blog.
Would you kindly oblige?
greetings
abdulhadi

Thanks, Joker, for your kind note on my e person.
May reciprocate by assuring you that I have NEVER used and I do not think I will ever refer to al-Khalifa or anyone else as "the intruders that came to this country."
I do use is either Fath or Ghazw, Conquest. Both words are officially used in Bahrain and can be found in any school book on Bahrain's history. Or just look at the grand mosque in al-fateh district.
I do not know how old are you and whether you have heard of 1983 festivities, conferences, symposia etc...to celeberate the CONQUEST of 1783 ( modelled after the US Bicentennial few years earlier).

For me, that was an eye opener.
The first question I started with is how the legacy of that conquest (real events, myths and folklore, invented traditions, and even lies) can affect the rulers and the ruled.
I suggested that this legacy is a problem for nation-building in our country.
I tried to articulate this point in several papers and lectures. I might be wrong of course. But I need a counter argument to reconsider my position.
If I may let suggest to borrow my book on

Shawn,

We do have a detox programme.

It is administered by the governmemt.

All toxins are filtered. We the people of wonderland are blessed. We are banned from hearing evil, seeing evil and speaking evil.

If and when we do see evil or hear evil or smell evil, we are told it is fabricated evil.. so no thanks. there is no need for us to detox.

And DON'T SPAM MY BLOG. I get enough of that from mercenaries.

I tried to read the Arabic text but in vain.
Anyway, it is an internal affairs and no comments.
I did not believe in written histories. Those who writes histories scribes it for the rulers of their times and for their whims.

Interesting comments. I can't say I really know much about Bahrain, other than the usual about Dilmun.

It is unfortunate that we are told what to know and think...in whichever country we live in.

A phrase that might be handy to know, 'History is written by the victorious'

...or these days, Hollywood.

Keep up the good work.

p.s. You might find that clicking on word verify in the comments settings might help with spam comments.

I agree with you on this one ain al yaman...

the text is too small.. there are even typos in it which i didnt spot because it's TOO SMALL.

I will try and fix it tomorrow..I cant be arsed now ;)

And Mohammed, there isn't anything brave in cutting and pasting.

Dr Khalaf did the research and presented it..and I went on a rant on history.

History is a dear subject to me. But I can't say that about our history: both Arab, Islamic and Gulf.

I feel like throwing up everytime I read about the heros and the conquerers and the you-know-what.

I roll my eyes and wonder if it is all true.

At the condolence meet last month, I tried hard not to laugh at one point. I couldn't stand the woman giving the sermon. I had to get out for fresh air .. and laugh at the ridiculous things she was saying.

I am not ridiculing my religion. I am not only Muslim, but Shia. To add insult to injury, I am Sayed.

So, yes, I do hold the Imams in high esteem, not because I was taught to..but because I read a few of the rational books available and appreciate the role they have played in upholding the words of Allah in what became the dark ages of the Shia populance.

Having said this, we do sensationalise our history to the point that a person with a forward-looking mentality fails to comprehend.

Take the Battle of Karbala, for instance. I have always questioned some of the exaggerations in it and everytime I opened my mouth people older than me would go: Pray to God for forgiveness.

Have I no right to ask?

Our history is sacred. It is a trust. It has to be presented in a factual manner, backed with evidence and documentation.

The history of Islam is a mere 1,400 something years; the modern history of wonderland is ridiculously shorter.

We can't have so many tales. It (history) cannot be swept under the carpet.

There is just so much dirt to cover up and so much the poor carpet can take.

May god bless the carpet and do whatever he wants with its soul.

Amen

I'm curious - why do you refer to Bahrain as Wonderland?

In an age of endless appropriations - history by itself has been the biggest victim. It has been warped by prejudices of all sorts.

We make a mockery of human intelligence when such prejudices are masqueraded as truth and facts. What is lost in this

Nobel Prize winning Economist - Amartya Sen has written a new book. I'll quote from a review I read - simply cause I haven't been able to get a copy of the book yet :-)

|| In The Argumentative Indian: Writings on Indian History, Culture and Identity Amartya Sen insists that the love of debate and dissent is as deeply entrenched in Indian culture as the love of religion and mysticism. Understanding this little-known fact, he says, is one of the keys to unlocking the puzzle that still baffles so many Western political scientists: how an impoverished and unruly country like India has turned into one of the world's most successful democracies.||

I am not a historian; I am a wordsmith by profession. I do believe history is a science... more like physics.

I think dissent plays a very important role in the evolution of human beings. Without dissent this world would have been full of cannibals.

All the prophets at some point or the other expressed their dissent at the systems and structures in place.

Back home in India, some universities have taken teaching history to a new paradigm. These days young men and women have a chance of learning and studying HISTORIOGRAPHY:

"the writing of history; especially : the writing of history based on the critical examination of sources, the selection of particulars from the authentic materials, and the synthesis of particulars into a narrative that will stand the test of critical methods."

Have a nice day Silly!
