This morning, millions stumbled out of bed with a huge handover - except me!

I simply couldn't go to sleep. I don't know what was wrong with me or why I simply couldn't switch off my twisted mind and just shut off for a while, to welcome the new year with renewed energy and vigour and maybe a pinch of hope and optimism.

For the first time in what seems like millions of years, we had no plans for New Year. There wasn't a booking made at any of our favourite haunts. Hubby was at work. And I was going with the flow.

At 6pm, we (a group of not so disenchanted Bahrainis located in Southern Ontario) decided to venture to Niagara Falls later that night to ring in the New Year in style. Alright, there was an open-air concert, there were thousands of stoned and drunken people singing in the freezing weather and a humble display of fireworks.. but all this didn't lift my spirits up.

Celebrations aren't celebrations away from home, family and friends. Oops... Am I starting to get homesick already?
