Planet Mars will be brightest in the night sky starting August. It will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye. This will culminate on August 27 when Mars comes to within 35 million miles of earth. Be sure to watch the sky on August 27 12:30am [acc. to IST]. It will look like the Earth has two moons. The next time Mars will be this close is in 2287. Share this with your loved ones and friends as NO ONE ALIVE TODAY will ever see it again

I swear I heard the same mess about Mars last year. I went outside when they told me to and it was a load of crap. It looked just like any star. Now if it was the size of the moon that would be funny.....and scary.

Mars did make an extraordinarily close approach to Earth which culminated on 27 August 2003, when the red planet came within 35 million miles (or 56 million kilometers) of Earth, its nearest approach to us in almost 60,000 years. At that time, Mars appeared approximately 6 times larger and 85 times brighter in the sky than it does ordinarily. (The message quoted above was often reproduced with an unfortunate line break in the middle of the second sentence of the second paragraph, leaving some readers with the mistaken impression that Mars would "look as large as the full moon to the naked eye" and not realizing that the statement only applied to those using viewing Mars through a scope with 75-power
magnification.)

This is from today's GDN:

Red planet treat for star-gazers

MARS will have a close encounter with earth in October of this year, not August as some e-mail circulars have stated, says a top astronomer.

On October 29, or 30 there will be a close approach of approximately 69 million kilometres, said Bahrain Astronomical Society chairman Dr Shawqi Al Dallal.

The phenomenon occurs when Mars and earth are at the same longitude with respect to the sun.

Dr Al Dallal said that during the encounter in October, Mars would appear slightly brighter than it does normally.

"Opposition happens almost every 26 months, but because of the elliptical orbit of earth and Mars, not all oppositions are equal," he said.

"On August 27, 2003 opposition was superior to all others. Then the distance from Mars to earth was 55m, 758 thousand kilometres."

"This was really the nearest approach of Mars to earth in almost 60,000 years. The next nearest approach of this magnitude will be August 28, 2287.

"If you look at Mars in October you won't see the remarkable difference as it was in 2003, but it will be slightly brighter than usual."

Dr Al Dallal said that the society would be organising something in October to observe the phenomenon.
